Reflections on Parenting Milestones
As a mother of two young adults and one teenager, I’ve navigated countless celebrations over the years—birthdays, graduations, and various milestones. In the midst of planning these events, I often find myself reflecting on the journey of parenthood. Did I do enough? Did I prepare them for the world? Did I instill in them the things of God? These questions linger, a constant companion in the midst of cherished memories.
Psalm 127:3 reminds us, “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” Amidst the uncertainties of parenting, one truth remains steadfast: Children are not temporary fixtures in our lives. They are a precious gift, entrusted to us by a loving God.
Jesus Himself emphasized the significance of children in the kingdom of heaven, urging us to emulate their simplicity and trust. Matthew 19:14 states, “Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” Children serve as examples of unwavering faith and uninhibited worship, demonstrating a profound understanding of God’s love and provision.
Observing children’s interactions with the divine reveals a purity of faith that adults often struggle to attain. Their unbridled worship, uninhibited by self-consciousness, and their straightforward approach to prayer serve as poignant reminders of the simplicity of God’s love.
To parents, caregivers, and all those entrusted with the care of children, take heart in the wisdom of Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Every interaction with your child is an opportunity to impart love, wisdom, and faith, shaping not only their spiritual journey but also your own.
As we journey alongside our children, may we embrace the profound lessons they teach us about faith, love, and unwavering trust in God. Let us view the world through the lens of a child, rediscovering the beauty of simplicity and the depth of God’s love. In doing so, may we cultivate an eternal impact that extends far beyond the boundaries of parenthood, shaping generations to come.
